rss The Lowdown on Alicante, Spain.

Pension El Mar.

Pensions, like hostals and residencias, are a great value in Spain. Run by families, the ones we stayed in were all extremely clean and cheap, and you get your own key to the building. Also, most of the triples worked out well for us, because one of the beds was always a double. The proprietors were always happy to show us the rooms first, and a private bathroom was never far away.

The centrally located Pension El Mar charged us 9 a person for a large, 3-bed room. From there, you can walk to the beach or along the promenade (remiscent more of a jungle than an innter-city strolling area) to the outdoor market. You can also see the huge, random mountain off to the side of town, which is topped by an old palace.
