Climbing Mt Fuji

Most Japanese view Mt Fuji as a beautiful mountain to view from afar, but not so pretty up close. Definitely not worth climbing!

So why do so many foreigners take up the challenge to reach the summit of the volcano affectionately known as Fuji San? After-all, it is an arduous climb, and there is also very little to admire on the way up. It's mostly just barren land with quite a bit of litter. In spite of all of this though, reaching the peak of Mount Fuji is very rewarding. As you stare down at the world below, you realise just how high you have climbed.

On the top there is a huge crater that is worth strolling around. For most people though, the main objective is to reach the summit early in the morning, (around 4.30am) in order to see the sunrise. Seeing the sun come up was an enriching experience that made all the effort seem so much more worthwile.

After the joy of reaching the peak, the descent can be seem like a anti-climax and a huge struggle. You think you have done all the hard work already, but there is still alot more to be done. On top of that, the Fujinomiya route down is very slippery. At times it seems to take forever.

The look on people's faces as they make their way down suggests they have been in a real battle. It is a struggle (though experienced climbers would probably disagree). All in all though it is memorable and worth attempting. Reaching the top is very satisfying and the view is spectacular. Having said that though, once is definitely enough!
