Kett's Heights: The Secret Garden... Kind of
Norwich is a busy place, filled with thousands of things to do in the always bustling city center. However, because there is so much to do in town, there's a great deal of the city that is never discovered.
While walking around and getting lost one day, I discovered one of Norwich's little secrets: Kett's Heights. Perhaps not really a secret, but when I told people about it, most had no idea what I was talking about.
Kett's Heights is a great little windy area that leads to amazing views of the city, with patches of grass perfect for picnicking or just a quiet place to study. The fact that you feel like you're discovering something new, as you walk through the unmarked gates into the grassy area, is reason enough to try and find the place, but there is also a significant history to the area that's worth reading about if you're interested.
The worst part about Kett's Heights, is finding it. If you have a good map it should be easy enough. Just on the outskirts of town, there is a street called Bishopbridge Road (that you get to by following Bishopgate street, just near the Cathedral, and crossing the Bishop bridge). If you follow this street, you'll come to Kett's Hill. Walk up the hill for about five minutes and you'll find a little black gate that is always open during the day, and will lead you to the great views and peaceful atmosphere of Kett's Heights.
Kett's Heights is definitely worth checking out, and while you're in the neighborhood, parallel to Bishopbridge Road is part of Riverside walk, a very pretty path that winds along the river.
