The Lowdown on Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
March 25th, 2006 | The lowdown by Gordon Candelin
Sovanna Phum Art Association.
Sovanna Phum is Khmer for "Magic Village", and the group - a collection of young Cambodians from the Royal School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh - began giving regular performances of traditional Khmer culture back in 1995.
The focus of Sovanna Phum's performances are Khmer classical dance, shadow puppet theatre (using painstakingly intricate puppets made by hand from cow leather and depicting scenes from the Ramayana), Khmer circus and music. They also develop independant modern projects, often working in collaboration with international art groups, and have performed internationally.
There are regular performances every friday night, and it is the perfect way to experience an aspect of Khmer culture that was very nearly lost, but can now be found thriving thanks to this dedicated group of artists.
